There are six tributes left in the arena. And Katniss and Peeta are two of them. Because of the new rule, Katniss searches for Peeta and ends up finding him blending in perfectly into the ground hiding. When she cleans him off in the stream near by, she sees wounds and stings for the tracker jackers. She heals these wounds, but has trouble healing a wound from Cato. He saw that Peeta was protecting Katniss and ended up slashing Peeta's leg pretty good. Katniss gives Peeta a kiss and in return, the recieve medicine to reduce healing for Peeta's leg. Katniss figured out that a kiss equals a present from their supporters.
After all the cleaning and applying the medicine, they build a fort camoflaged into rocks near by. They stay there for a few days while recovering. Katniss would go out and hunt and gather food for the both of them. A few days there was a big storm so there could be no hunting or anything. They were running low on food so they needed some from their supporters. And that is what they got.
Every year there is a dinner in the arena where tributes gather to fight. By coming, they will recieve a backpack with something they desoeratly need. Since Peeta was dying Katniss new she needed to go. When she they backpacks arrive, she ran to get hers but was stopped with a knive to the forehead by Cato's partner Clove. Clove wanted to make a show out of Katniss' death; however, Rue's teammate heard Clove talk about Rue and he came over and smashed Cloves face with a rock killing her. Katniss gets up a runs away before Cato comes running to save Clove.
Katniss gets back to the rock fort and passes out from all the blood loss. She wakes up to Peeta calling her name. She was out for a couple of days, loosing hunting time. While resting, the night sky lights up with the deaths for that day. Clove and Rue's partner with both gonners. That means that Cato got his revenge. There are now only four left. Cato, another girl who is staying clear, Peeta and Katniss.
Once Katniss and Peeta are healed they go out hutning. Peeta gathers berries and other leaves while Katniss goes and hunts. When she returns she sees Peeta coming out of the bushes and ask him why the cheese is somewhat gone. It was not him who has eaten it. Katniss notices that the berries next to the cheese on the ground are poisoned. They will kill someone right as they eat it. A few seconds later a cannon blast indocating someone is dead, and the body is recovered a few yards from where they were. The berries ended up kill the mysterious tribute. Cate, Katniss, and Peeta are left.
The next morning when Katniss and Peeta wake up, the stream has drained forcing them to go to the main lake where Cato is. This is what the gamers had in mind to speed up the results. Once they reached the river they hear Cato running for his life, but when Katniss shoots with an arrow he does not die. Cato has armor around his body. All of a sudden Katniss and Peeta see these big wolf looking things emerge from the forest and they also start to run to safety. They jump onto building where they can not be eaten. Cato is higher up on the building so Katniss tries to shoot him with an arrow but it is useless. All of a sudden Cato grabs Peeta with a knive to his neck. Katniss is reading to shoot Cato in the face with an arrow but knows if she does Cato and Peeta will both be lost to the big wolves. Katniss ends up shooting Cato in the hand and he drops the knive and ends up falling to the wolves. With his protection he puts up a fight but gets dragged off. A day later there has still not been a cannon fire. A few seconds later Cato appears in the tree line. Katniss aims her arrow and shoots Cato in the head. Katniss and Peeta are the only two left.
The annoucer comes on and says they took a look at the rule change and it will not stand. There can only be one winner of the Hunger Games. They did not actually mean for both tributes to make it to the end. During this Katniss and Peeta were arguing over who would die. But in the end Katniss comes up with a plan like always. They take the poison berries and put them in there mouth at the same time. Right after the announcer returns and says nevermind!!! It stands. Katniss and Peeta both spit out the berries and rinse out their mouths so they would not swallow any. They tricked the gamers into letting both tributes win. In the end Peeta finds out Katniss was faking liking him just so she could make it through the games while his feelings were real. THE END OF THE FIRST BOOK.
So I did not really like the ending. The book was good and Katniss is very smart for being from district 12. I can not wait to see what happens in the second book. I did enjoy all of the action in the arena also the alliances. There was also no hints to what comes next, which is what I like because it takes me by surpirse. I hope if you read this book you like it as much as I did. Time for book two!
